Seeking 10 Fertile Mares for MRLS Testing

July 25th, 2010

A group of private veterinarians in Central Kentucky are seeking ten fertile, breedable mares for an MRLS study.  Recent findings have shown a possible link to MRLS and a very small fungus that might have been the underlying cause of the losses suffered in early and late term pregnancies that hit Central Kentucky in 2001 with sporadic losses since.

This fungus has been isolated for numerous cases of aborted fetuses and this spring was isolated from the skin of the Eastern Tent Caterpillar.  The research will involve pasture breeding the mares, confirming pregnancies, then they will be divided into two groups.  Group 1 will be injected daily for 14 days with sterile saline and group 2 will be injected with saline containing the aforementioned fungus.  This will occur between 40 and 65 days of gestation.  Daily blood progesterone levels, CBC and chemistries will be ran.  Daily ultrasounds will also be performed to assess the health of the fetuses.  The mares will be aborted at the end of the study and either donated to UK or returned to the owner.

If you have any  mares you would be able to donate, please contact Dr. Alan Dorton at Woodford Equine Hospital by responding to this e mail, or by phoning 859-873-7361.

Thank You,

K.E.E.P. Announces Instant Racing Approved in KY; Incentives for Breeders & Racing

July 22nd, 2010

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission passed regulations today that will allow Kentucky racetracks to offer pari-mutuel wagering on historic horse races - commonly known as Instant Racing.  Governor Beshear and the members of the Commission are to be commended for working so diligently on behalf of our signature racing and breeding industries, and the 100,000 jobs they are responsible for providing.

While Instant Racing will not inject the same amount into purses and breeders incentives that VLT’s would, it is nonetheless a significant first step toward leveling the competitive playing field.  At Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, proceeds from Instant Racing have contributed millions of dollars to purses and breeders awards.

The passage of Instant Racing provides much needed good news for Kentucky’s equine industry, and could be responsible for generating new revenue for Kentucky purses and breeders incentives.  While we will continue working to allow our industry to fairly compete, we are appreciative of the efforts of Governor Beshear and the Racing Commission to provide the industry a boost through the passage of Instant Racing.
